Greyhound Safety Net

from kennel to couch

Still "in the kennel"

All of our greyhounds are fully temperament tested prior to acceptance, and as a first introduction to pet life, they live in foster care in a home environment as inside companions, most spend some time in a home with a little dog.

They are desexed, wormed, heartworm tested and treated, flea treated, C5 vaccinated and microchipped prior to going into foster care. They then spend on average 6 - 8 weeks in a home environment prior to adoption, so by the time they are ready to head off into the big wide world, we have excellent knowledge of individual requirements for their perfect forever home.

We are the Greyhound Pet People - our matching abilities are second to none!

They come with a collar, lead, coat and muzzle, and we organise to have the microchip changed into your name.

An adoption donation of $245 applies to recover some of the costs associated with rehoming.

PEGGY - aged 6

We are determined to find Peggy a great home. She is one of the nicest dogs we have met. She is a big girl (bigger than even most boys) & does have a weight problem but please don’t let this blind you to her wonderful qualities. Peggy is a very calm & settled house dog who is excellently house trained but she also has a sense of fun. She would love a yard big enough for her to do the odd zoomie. She loves car trips & ideally would love a home where she goes everywhere with her people. She is good with horses, caged chooks & other dogs but would be happy being an only dog. Because of her size she is only suited to a home with older/teenage children.

Those of you who watch our website might have noticed Peggy was briefly adopted but she has returned to us because she is too big for young children. Peggy is a wonderful dog with so much to offer as a pet it is difficult for us to understand why it is taking so long for her to find the right home. Peggy is a quiet dog looking for a quiet lifestyle where she will be appreciated for the lovely dog she is. Despite her size she is suited to a home with older (but not frail) people.

ZIVA - aged 2

Ziva is a real sweatheart - she is a litter mate of Buffy who recently found her forever home. Unlike Buffy who is a pocket rocket, Ziva is a shy wallflower. She has not yet been cat tested, however she is a little nervous around possums so we are hopeful!

It only took a couple of hours in foster care, before she snuggled up to her foster friend.

BLUE - aged 11 months - cat friendly

Blue has been a pet since he was five weeks old and has been raised as part of a family. He is great with cats and lives inside and out with three cats and one other dog. Blue is terrific with other dogs, including quite small terriers. Blue is also great with horses, having been around them all his life. He goes with his family on long horse rides in the forest and generally messes around on a farm all of the time. Blue is great at recall, sits, is immaculately house trained and is good in the car. Blue is great with people, but is too boisterous for small children. He would be fine with children aged 9+.  Blue is fabulous. He broke his leg mid May, had surgery and didn’t require a cast. He has healed terrifically, is totally sound and our vet is happy to talk to his future owners if they have any concerns.

Blue is available for adoption now.

ANNIE - aged 4

Annie is doing very well in foster care. She started off as a very early riser, but has now settled into the family routine. She is still finding life outside the kennel a little daunting - especially traffic noises, which sometimnes scare her.

Annie loved her trainers grand children, so will easily fit into a family environment with school agd (or older) children. She will do fine as an only dog so long as she gets lots of human attention and daily walks.

Banjo - aged 2

Banjo was a bit of a mess when he first came into GSN - he has not had a happy couple of months poor fellow!

Now in foster care, he is coming out of his shell, and his carer tells us "Banjo is a great dog but does need company & will need a home with an owner who is around a lot. He gets on well with everyone, and would make a great dog to take to work with you."

He is very popular with the ladies - all of the female greys rush to give him kisses.

Banjo is available for adoption now.

Lady - aged 4

Lady has found it an absolute breeze to settle in as an indoor pet. She loves her comfy bed, walks with the children. the company of other greyhounds - she loves it all! Lady is affectionate and just adores everyone she meets, showering them with kisses and a waggy tail.

A note from Lady's carer.

"Lady may not have looked very ‘ladylike’ when she came to GSN but just within a few days she is starting to live up to her name. She is a gorgeous, loving, gentle girl with a lovely soft coat that is becoming less woolly and more greyhound-like as she spends more time in the warmth. She gets along wonderfully with the children, and with all other dogs; she’s so eager to please. She doesn’t seem to have a bad habit about her; she knows which bowl is hers and which are the other dogs’; she is told something once and understands it for next time – for example, after looking longingly at the human beds and being told NO, she hasn’t really tried getting on them at all. She’s so happy just being inside and happily sleeps even on the wooden floor sometimes, although the dog bed and the couch are her preferred options, naturally! She is happy to share the couch with a human or a dog; she loves the trips to school where she wags her tails at everyone; she even wagged it while getting vaccinated at the vets today! She passed her health test with flying colours; her pearly white teeth are in perfect order and her generally good condition indicates that she can’t be more than 4 years old. Don’t let the greying of her face deceive you; she is full of life, but she is not an overbearing or overly active dog. She’s happy to sleep after her beloved walks, and she walks without pulling at all. It’s a delight when out and about watching her sniffing everything around her as though this is a whole new world she’s discovering. She is so grateful for it all but she’s dignified and not overly needy. She rests her head on our knees and pays attention to everything, and she’s content just to be around us. When left alone in the house, she accepts it and lies nicely till we get home. She eats everything with gratitude, she is fully house trained and hasn’t really set a paw wrong. What more can I can except that whoever gets her will experience it all - the full spectrum of a greyhound’s sensitivity and intelligence and beauty!"

Denzel - aged 18 months

Denzel is just a big baby. A laid back fellow, he hangs on your every word. He will bond very quickly and enjoy any actvities that involve his humans.

Here is an update from his carer

"Denzel is like a little boy sent off to boarding school. He's not sure what's happening or why he's in this new place, but he's determined to make a good impression and try to stay out of trouble ... except at mealtimes. He's been kept hungry for quite a while now, and when all that 'boarding school' food comes out he tends to make a bit of a pig of himself. But he's getting better and otherwise his manners are very good. Being unsure of himself, he clings to your leg as you walk around, and rests his head on your arm or lap when you sit down. He's a bit surprised that these new people actually seem to like him and he enjoys ear rubs and being spoken to gently. Although Denzel is a biggish boy, he has a lovely prancing gait and he dances around throwing toys in the air. Denzel has been clean in the house since day 1 and after a bit more settling in will make a wonderful pet.

Denzel is available for adoption now.

Kitty - aged 3 - cat friendly

Kitty was rescued a few months ago and has been living in a home with a cat. Unfortunately Kitty frets when left alone, so we have been asked to rehome her. She is a delightful girl who more than anything just wants to be happy and loved.

We have her in foster care with a stay at home mum, a young child, a small pup, a couple of cats and a greyhound - she is loving it!. Kitty is active and can be quite full on, so she will need lots of activity and excercise. She will also benefit from obedience training. She will make a lovely family pet, in the right home.

Kitty is available for adoption now.

Blake - aged 2

Poor Blake tried his heart out to be a good racer, but ended up at the pound for all of his efforts! Now safe in foster care he is getting much needed tlc and some good food. All skin and bones when he came to us, he is now putting on weight and coming out of his shell.

Despite all of this, he is a happy lively playful fellow, who will need the company of another dog in his forever home.

Blake is available for adoption now.

Minty - aged 3

Minty is a gorgeous girl, happily living as an only dog. Her carers tell us she's perfect, loves hr walks, enjoys her food, and is absolutely no problem to have around. A pretty girl, Minty is on the smaller side for a greyhound and will fit into any home.

Lara - aged 2

Lara is the one on the right - this photo was taken by her trainer - she's on his couch, so you can imagine what Lara thought about the idea of being a race dog! She is currently recovering from her vet work and has just gone into foster care.

a note from Lara's carer

"Lara is just about the most beautiful greyhound we’ve met; she is so velvety and her coat is so shiny it’s like a mirror. Her tail is so long it almost touches the ground, and overall she’s in superb condition. She’s also the gentlest greyhound we’ve met: she honestly wouldn’t hurt a fly I think! She has never raced and perhaps that adds to her completely gentle behaviour. She would thrive within a family with kids of any age, because she doesn’t jump or pull and is excellent when meeting new people and children. She would also thrive in a home where someone, no-matter what age, just wants a sweet and loving companion. She would be happiest if she could be with you all the time. She settles so well at night when her bed is moved into a human bedroom; she’ll sleep contentedly on her own bed and won’t say no to sleeping on a human bed if the human is in there, but we’ve not let her do that to see how she responds, and she accepts it graciously. She doesn’t even attempt to sniff food from the youngest child in the house who’s about her height, she doesn’t table-surf, she allows her own food to be moved or taken from her without growling, and she never attempts to take food from the other dogs. It’s enough to say ‘no’ once when she does something close to wrong, and she learns it immediately. She loves her walks and is quite confident out in the open with lots of things to sniff and see. She is so loyal and innocent; all she really wants is a human who can give her lots of reassuring pats and cuddles. Though she’s very young still, she’s not a puppy anymore; she’s completely house-trained, and is very good when left alone for shorter periods (even if you do get ‘the look’ when you’re going out but that happens with all of them!). I think as the weeks pass she’d also gain a bit of a playful streak because she’s shown some signs of it and made us laugh. She gains more confidence every day and will blossom in the right environment – she’s melted our hearts already!"

Lara is in foster care in SE Melbourne if you would like to pay her a visit!
