Greyhound Adoption or Fostering enquiries

We are based in south-east Melbourne and take in, and adopt out, greyhounds throughout Victoria. As a rule, we do not adopt out dogs interstate, or outside Australia.
Have you got the full agreement of everyone in your household to adopt or foster?
GSN Volunteers will be responding to your application, so we ask you to ensure that everyone in your household is on-board before you submit an application, so we can focus on placing greyhounds in homes.

Do you live in an Apartment?
It needs more commitment to care for a greyhound in an Apartment, so please read our information on Greyhounds and Apartment Living before you apply to adopt or foster a GSN greyhound.

Off Leash Parks and Greyhounds
Under Victorian Law, greyhounds are never allowed off leash unless on private property.
This law includes designated off-leash areas, such as fenced or un-fenced dog parks, leash free beaches, etc.  We also discourage people from taking a leashed greyhound to areas where other dogs are off leash, as it can cause frustration or distress to the greyhound who cannot run around while the other dogs are doing so.

Cat-friendly Greyhounds
Most greyhounds are not cat-friendly, so please understand there could be a long wait for a greyhound that is safe to live with cats. Those that are cat-friendly may be very timid so will need a lot of support to adjust to life as a pet.

    18 - 30 30 - 60 Over 60

If you answered "apartment", please read our article on apartment living with a greyhound before proceeding and indicate that you have done so.

Please note, if the outside area is a balcony, then the balcony fences MUST be at least 1.5 meters high. Be aware that a balcony is not considered suitable for toileting a large dog, even with a grassed "pet potty" arrangement. The volume of output would quickly make the balcony unsanitary and smelly.

Please specify flights or a number of steps (e.g. specify how many) and whether the steps/stairs are open (so that they can be seen through) or enclosed (as some greyhounds will tackle closed-in stairs but will balk at open stairs with no solid risers).
