Welfare of Greyhounds

GSN is concerned with the welfare of all greyhounds and endeavours to be a voice for our silent companions. GSN has prepared submissions to government bodies to try and improve their lives - particularly for pet greyhounds.
Below are a number links to information on greyhounds and welfare issues, that may be of interest to you.

  • Victorian Government response to the 'Breed Specific Laws' enquiry, which basically refers to the enquiry’s recommendation to remove the current muzzling requirements for pet greyhounds. They have said they would consider it as part of broader welfare considerations for greyhounds.

  • Animal Welfare Victoria’s for current issues with animal rehoming includes sector reform, community foster care networks, foster carer registration scheme, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 and Domestic Animals Act 1994.
  • GRV's (Greyhound Racing Victoria) 2016 Annual Report included a Welfare report which said "In 2015-16, 3,012 greyhounds registered in Victoria were euthanased. GRV considers this figure completely unacceptable and is committed to ensuring Victorian greyhounds associated with the sport are re-homed."

GSN acknowledges the work done by GRV and the industry since then and notes that GRV’s 2020/2021 annual report cited that 409 greyhounds were euthanased in that year (including on-track euthanasia). GSN mourns the loss of these dogs and knows that more work can still be done for greyhounds.
